The namesake of the New Yardley Inn is historic Yardley, Pennsylvania, a picturesque village on the Delaware River north of Philadelphia that is known for its warmth and hospitality. Yardley was established in the 1600s and deeded by William Penn to fellow Quaker Thomas Yardley who declared that it would be a place where citizens would work in harmony free of persecution (in fact-it was to become one of the stops on the "Underground Railroad" for escaping slaves). Yardley is where Suzanne Crager was born and reared right across the street from Yardley House-the oldest residence in town and where she and Dillon were married in the town's Episcopal Church. Years later-when the Cragers set to enact their dream of establishing a bed and breakfast - a location in Door County Wisconsin was selected because it evoked the same warmth and hospitality-scenic beauty and serenity in the town of Yardley. Thus-the New Yardley Inn has come into being to perpetuate traditional values of comfort and caring. |
